If you want a flash executive car but don't have much cash, an S-Type is unbeatable. The retro-styled Jag offers unrivalled value within its segment, but they're not as rewarding to drive as most rivals, while reliability is frequently poor - with dealers sometimes unable or unwilling to put things right. Your neighbours might envy your posh car, but the ownership experience can be frustrating.
While its rivals can't make enough compact executives to satisfy demand, Jaguar has always struggled with the X-Type. That's down to the quality not always being as good as elsewhere, but the car is a great drive thanks to its Mondeo underpinnings. The small Jag is also very capable, and in diesel estate form it makes a cracking used buy. Post-2003 examples are best built, while safety and security are major plus points.
It may have looked like a relic from the 1960s, but the XJ of 2003 was pretty high-tech with its lightweight aluminium body shell and ultra-modern equipment. Very different from its German rivals, thanks to suspension that's cossetting rather than sporty, Jag's flagship saloon is fast, refined, frugal and generally reliable. It's also excellent value, so if you're looking for some seriously luxurious transport and you're on a tight budget, this could be the answer.
Jaguar's slogan was always 'Grace, Space and Pace', and nowhere is this more evident than here - this is one of the most comfortable cruisers around. However, thanks to a reputation for occasionally patchy reliability, Jaguars have always depreciated more heavily than their German rivals. These cars are generally well-built though, and you'll have to search hard to find a more accomplished or better value long-distance tourer.
It looked great, but was outdated even when it was launched. However, now the original Jaguar XK has been superseded, it's a guaranteed future classic - and the brilliance of the replacement is bound to have a halo effect on its predecessor. While there are far better driver's cars out there, the looks, that badge and the heritage make the XK very tempting.
